| Care | Hydrangeas thrive in moist but well drained, fertile soil. In late Winter or early Spring, prune misplaced or crossing branches. A light pruning enhances flowering, and keeps your Hydrangea healthy, so leave the old flowerheads on the plant over Winter (to protect the new buds). Then, in late Winter/early Spring, prune the previous year's flowered shoots by up to 30cm/12inches (to just above two strong buds). Cut out weak or thin shoots, and prune one or two of the oldest stems to the base.Flowers (except white flowered cultivars) are affected by soil type, Hydrangea flowers are pink in alkaline soils, blue in acidic soils, and mixed in neutral soils. |
| Uses | -Fantastic as part of a mixed border -Cottage/informal garden -flower arranging |
| Description | The hortensia Hydrangeas produce showy mopheads of sterile flowers from Summer to Autumn. These flowers are normally larger than the fertile lacecap flowering varieties. Most Hydrangeas are deciduous, with some varieties having attractive peeling bark and handsome foliage with good autumnal colour. |
