| Aspect | Lettuces prefer a bit of light shade in the summer if possible. |
| Care | lettuces are not fussy with the soil type, although they prefer a mildly acidic or neutral soil. This variety copes well with dry soil, but doesn't mind very wet soil either. Space 20-30cm apart (depending on variety), and keep well watered until established, otherwise they may taste bitter. If slugs and aphids are a real problen, you could cover them with cloches. However, planting them as plants, instead of sowing the seed will mean they are already a bit established and therefore more capable of survival! Plant at fortnightly intervals to ensure a a succession of crops. To harvest, you should cut as soon as they have hearted, as they will bolt quickly. |
| Uses | -Salads -can be grown in tubs as a patio kitchen -fantastic for intercropping (making the most of all avaialable space)

| Description | Lettuce is a favourite in the salad world! Butterhead varieties are hearted, and have soft, (almost greasy) leaves. Leaves are normally green or red tinged, and the flavour is quite mild. They are more tolerant of drought and heat than other varieties (which means they are less likely to bolt) and are therefore ideal to grow in the Summer. |
