| Care | Sprouts need firm soil. They should be deeply planted so that the bottom leaves rest on top pf the soil. Mound up the earth around the base as they grow, and give them canes for extra support on windy sites. Sprouts taste better after a frost. In the Spring, before planting, you should add some well rotted organic manure to the soil, and prhaps even a low fertility soil improver. If plants are not growing vigorously, add a mulch of grass mowings, or add chicken manure fertiliser in mid-late July. Plant 45cm-1m apart (depending on the variety). |
| Uses | -If used in a mixed planting scheme, can provide some unusual winter interest -Delicious to eat -easy to grow |
| Description | These very hardy crops take a long time mature, but they also have a long cropping period. That's okay though, because Sprouts need wide spacings between them, and we can make the most of this space by filling it with lettuces and other fast growing crops, while the Sprouts are young and don't need the room. Should be planted in Spring, for an Autumn and Winter harvest. |
