They need a sheltered, sunny position, . Soil should be moisture retentive, as this will allow deep rooting.
Care
From late May to July, plant runner beans, ensuring a spacing of 60cm. Dwarf varieties only need to be spaced 30cm apart. Mulch well once the plants are established. Water well in dry weather, once the first floer buds appear, to encourage more flower production. Flowers must be pollinated. Beans grow best in fertile soil, so add planty of oganic manure, but do not add extra nitrogen, as beans already have their own nitrogen fixing nodes, therfore excess nitrogen can cause crops to become too leafy, delaying crops.

Description
These are a biennial crop but are grown as annuals because they are frost tender. They were orginally bought to English gardens for their pretty flowers, but people soon discovered the rough textured, tasy seedpods (which are produced abundantly) and grew them for that purpose instead. They need a cane framework to support their twining, climbing habit.Runner beans are easy to grow and are prolific.
