Care
These plants will tolerate most soil types except waterlogged soils! They need a relatively fertile, weed free soil. Mulching (when the spears emerge) will help to suppress weeds, retain moisture in the soil, and fertilise. Do not grow in a windy site, and tall plants may need support. Once leaves turn yellow in autumn, cut the stems down to the ground asap. Protect young shoots with fleece in cold springs.
Uses
-An delicacy in terms of taste
-Comes back every year
-The ferny leaves can look fantastic in the middle or at the back of a mixed bed/border.
Description
Asparagus produces deliciously tasty spears that come through the surface of the ground from rhizomes. They should not be harvested for the first three years. In the third year They can be harvested from April-June, when the spears are 15cm/6inches tall (they should be cut 2.5cm below the soil). They are a relatively easy crop to grow once established, and although they do not produce much yield for how much room they take up, they crop for 20 years!
