Care
Prefer a well drained, firm soil. Soil should not be poor (or too fertile, as this causes leeks to become course, and to develop too much leafy growth. They are easy to grow, fully hardy and do not take up much space. If you wish (optional), to increase the amount of white on the stem, you should blanch them by wrapping a paper bag around them stem, and then mounding the soil around the stem as it grows (this blocks out the light). Keep plants watered, especially in dry spells, and harvest from summer onwards (they are mainly an autumn/winter crop). Keep the soil weed free but be careful not to remove any young, grass-like leeks by mistake!
Uses
-Great for soups and stews
-Great gap fillers in vegetable patches as well as beds/borders
Description
Leeks have a very pleasant, mild flavour, and are a fantastic flavouring for soups and stews. They are easy to grow and their slim-line, upright habit means that they don't take up much space!
