Aspect
Most hostas prefer full sun or patial shade. Full sun gives yellow leaved or variegated cultivars better leaf colour, but leaves can also be scorched if the sun is too powerful. The site should be sheltered from cold, drying winds.
Care
They need a fertile, moist but well drained soil. Unfortunately it seems they taste as good as they look, as they are a favourite on every slug's menu! To avoid slug damage try growing them in containers, or use oraganic slug pellets/sand/grit/eggshells/beer traps/copper to deter them. Mulch between the plants (to conserve soil moisture) in spring.
Uses
-Excellent groundcover (their dense, overlapping foliage blocks out all the sunlight so that weeds can't grow underneath them)
-Ideal for shady sites, but if grown under trees they need lots of well rotted manure added to the soil, as this should improve fertility and help to retain moisture.
-Provides striking foliage contrasts in beds/borders
-Can be grown in containers as a patio display
Description
These plants are grown for their exceptional foliage. Their large leaves look distinguished next to grasses or other tall, strappy plants.
