Name
Apple Tree
Price
£ 30.00 / each
Colours
green
Size
Height: 1.5-9m/5-28ft
Spacing: 0.75-7.5m
Aspect
They like an open site, but should be protected from the wind, and shouldn't be planted in a frost pocket. They thrive if grown along a south facing wall/fence.
Care
They prefer a rich, free draining soil that is slightly acidic. If your soil is not very rich, dig in plenty of well rotted manure, and water it with a fertilizer. They will need to be pruned every winter, and if you have trained your tree into a shape (along a wall/fence), then you will also need to prune it in summer to maintain the shape. De-weed regularly and mulch to suppress weeds, and maintain the soil's moisture content.
Uses
-Fantastic for decorating walls/fences (can be pruned to different shapes such as cordons, fans and espaliers.)
-Can be a free standing/focal point tree
-orchards
Description
An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Apples are so poular that there are thousnads of varieties, suitable for different gardens (including small gardens). Growing them in cordons along a south facing fence/wall is a fantastic way to save space while growing different varieties so that they can cross pollinate and produce better fruit. Apples store well for long periods of time, so you could be enjoying the fruits of your labour into autumn!
