| Care | Before planting, you should prepare soil in autumn by forking over a large area and removing weeds.Add well rotted manure and pelleted general purpose fertiliser to the planting hole. Keep well watered until established and mulch thickly. Net during June and July to protect fruit from birds. Gooseberries are very hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as 28C, but they will not tolerate drought. Do not fertilize too much, as this could cause rapid but weak growth which is likely to be damaged in the wind.
